hi all,
Ok, so I'm living in a big city now, doing law school and am soon to become a trainee lawyer. As a result, I will need a GPS solution to help get around. I have an IPhone 4 and have all intention of upgrading to a 4S when I can. Anyway, I'd like to know what aps you use for GPS navegation, why they're good and how you use them. Any UK-specific commentary would be particularly welcome. Also keep in mind that my mobility is not amazing and UK streets are nowhere near intuitive. If you feel that the IPhone is the best method, let me know that too and advocate another. I'm open to all suggestions.
shoot!

First, I'd almost recommend waiting till the Iphone 5 comes out (if you want to upgrade) since it's going to be out soon. As for GPS apps, that's something I'm curious about too. I've ehard pretty good things about Ariadne myself, but have yet to try it.
hi. Yep, that's what I'm doing is waiting for the 5 lol.

If you're going to wait for the iPhone 5, hold off on buying a GPS ap for the moment. The new version of maps coded in IOS 6 is supposed to be as good as if not better than most of the GPS aps currentlya vailable for apple products.
i use the maps on my iphone. every day. it is great.
I also really like Ariadne GPS, both because it can announce your street names as you move, plus you can explore by touch, which to me is a real benefit. I would rather hear street names as a blind traveler, than be led around by the nose using turn by turn directions. I'm sure there's a time and a place where turn by turn would be really helpful, and I bought Navigon summer of 2011 but still. A combination of Ariadne GPS and AroundMe seems really quite a boon.
Hi,
asking which app is the best doesn't make much sense in my opinion, it all depends on your needs. I think the advice to wait for the new iPhone is good, and if the new maps app will be as good as is rumoured, I would recommend not to get another mainstream navigation app like Navigon or Tomtom. However, there are several apps created especially for blind and vi users, and these all do different things. I like BlindSquare a lot, because it informs me of what's in the suroundings without me having to fumble with the phone which can be quite distracting. However, it doesn't work so well in rural areas because it relies on data from FourSquare and Open Street Map. Ariadne works better in rural areas, it uses Google Maps. Ariadne can, however, only inform you of points that you have saved or imported yourself, while BlindSquare will inform you of whatever point is near you, provided it's in the FourSquare database. BlindSquare is also the only app that informs you about street intersections. The developer is very active and plans many improvements. But for some areas I'd still prefer to use Ariadne. Sendero is also planning to releas a navigation app for the VI and blind, it'll be interesting how it will be different from all the options available. If you are serious about getting the info now, go to www.applevis.com and use the search box to look up Navigon, BlindSquare, Ariadne GPS, MyWay, Sendero Lookaround etc. But I think it makes more sense to wait untill you actually have your iPhone, because just reading about this isn't very helpful when you try to understand all the different options.
Good Luck and enjoy your iPhone when you get it.
